Set in an
environment of rare
beauty, Bibbona
retains the fascination
of an ancient medieval
village surrounded
by green woods and
countryside.
Bibbona was built on
a low hill and was
already known in
ancient times before it
became an Etruscan
settlement. It still
preserves the typical
layout of an old
inhabited fortress.
In the old town, where
characteristic narrow
alleys run into little
medieval squares, the
lovely 11th century
church of San Ilario
with its unusual
trapezium shape is
of particular interest.
The original
Romanesque part of
the church houses two
ancient marble
holy-water fonts and
a painting of great
value, La Madonna
del Rosario.
Santa Maria della
Pietà, a Renaissance
church built in the
shape of a Greek
cross at the end of
the 15th century,
is situated right at the
entrance to the town.
Inside the church are
a 14th-century
tempera Pietà, a
Trinità and 17th-century
marble ornaments.
Above the main door
on the façade
of the church of
San Giuseppe (1589)
the coat of arms of
the Vallombrosian
order bears testimony
to the monks'
presence here in times
past.
The medieval Old
Town Hall symbolizes
the town's rich civic
history, which is
preserved in the
Council's historical
archives.
Fascinating events
such as the Historic
Procession and Palio
delle Botti, which
evoke folkloristic and
historical traditions
take place during
March-April against
the enchanting
background of the old
village.
