castiglioncello
castiglioncello
Originally an Etruscan village, Castiglioncello stands on a small headland at the foot of the Livorno hills. "The pearl of the Tyrrhenian", this well-known holiday resort has a charm all its own. Seawatchers, divers and fishermen flock to this coast, along with sailing and windsurfing enthusiasts.

The marinas at Chioma and Castiglioncello provide an excellent base for all kinds of leisure craft, and well-organised sailing clubs guarantee first-rate services. Sheer red cliffs, sheltered bays, bathing beaches, coves washed by crystal clear water and a walk through the splendid Marradi Pinewood, which joins the charming Punta Righini with Rosignano's Marina. Castiglioncello's beauty has inspired artists, painters, writers and poets.

Celebrated by painters of the Macchiaioli school, favoured by many literary and artistic personalities, it is an important centre for artistic and scientific events. Every year cultural events, dance seasons, literary and philosophical awards and international conferences are held at Castello Pasquini. Important cultural initiatives take place at the Diego Martelli Art Centre and at the Communication Centre.

The historic Villa Celestina is now a university centre dedicated to marine and environmental studies. Located on the Castiglioncello headland is the Archaeological Museum housing a newly reorganised display of important Etruscan finds brought to light during excavations carried out at the beginning of the 1900s. Close to the museum stands the Medici Tower and the 17th-century Church of Sant'Andrea in the small square of the same name.

European Union Blue Flag-winning Castiglioncello is also a centre for sports - watersports, tennis and hiking can all be enjoyed here. The shady pinewood, its air laden with woodland scents, is an inviting place for relaxing walks. A wide choice of accommodation offers oldfashioned hospitality, and high-quality cuisine can be found in numerous restaurants where freshcaught fish is served. La Festa del Pesce, held in Caletta, is a not to be missed event for lovers of good food.
