Originally part of an
archipelago (20 million
years ago!), the heights
behind Livorno form the
Livorno Hills Park.
The Park, where woods
of heather, holm-oak, elm
and cork flourish, is a
unique example of
Mediterranean scrub.
Flowering broom and
orchids add brilliance to
the park's colours.
Green poplars, willows
and ash grow along the
rivers and streams. Wild
boar, foxes, weasels and
martens make their home
in the Park.
As well as the natural
environment, the Park
contains archaeological
finds and interesting
sites such as the
Sambuca and the
Aqueduct designed by
the architect Poccianti.
A
favourite place for
outdoor activities, the
Collesalvetti area is
home to events involving
country pursuits and
open-air sports such as
fishing, canoeing,
hunting, archery and
skeet shooting.
In this
typically Tuscan country
setting, with its riding
centres and stables, and
livestock farms, the
opportunities for
relaxation and fun in
touch with nature are
endless.
The Park is a
favourite place for hiking,
walking, biking and
horse riding along many
trails.
