WALKING ON THE COSTA DEGLI ETRUSCHI
The area in which the itineraries described are set encompasses the environmental variety typical of Mediterranean areas. Cart tracks and footpaths do not present technical difficulties and are also suitable for not very experienced hikers. Some of the itineraries proposed, although the difference in altitude is not too challenging, do require a certain amount of walking experience as they take about 5 or 6 hours.
For this reason it is essential to be properly equipped for the itinerary according to the type of route, the duration and the expected weather conditions.
From a technical point of view, we recommend you study the route on a map in advance. Some routes require particular attention to orienteering and during the walk you should always follow the directions given for the route scrupulously.
As far as accessibility is concerned, it should be stressed that the routes are accessible all year round. Of course the conditions change: in spring and autumn conditions are ideal, with mild, pleasant temperatures, while in the hotter summer months it is important to drink plenty of liquids, so at least one water-bottle should be taken along. One problem could be the presence of horseflies, these insects, which are attracted by sweat, cause painful bites and are difficult to avoid. You can protect yourself with specific insect repellents, including sprays, available from pharmacies. Your rucksack should always contain a hat, a sweater, one or two spare tee-shirts, a wind-proof jacket, suncream, sunglasses and a swimming costume, as some of the itineraries are located near the coast. During the winter the conditions of the routes are good, except during heavy rain. With regard to clothing, a wind and rainproof jacket is essential. As the days are shorter, it is good practice to walk during the morning, planning the return for lunchtime.
It is recommended that hiking boots are always worn as they are more stable than running shoes and provide a much better grip on rocky, uneven terrain and more protection against possible sprains.
Finally, prudence is advised. Mobile phone coverage is not always total and some stretches of the itineraries are really isolated. So it is a good idea to think about carrying sufficient food rations. In addition to water, it is recommended that you take fruit, saline supplements and energy bars. A final recommendation: the wild boar hunting season is open on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays during the period between 1st November and 31st January. Get information in advance and avoid walking in the woods on those days and in those places frequented by hunters.
