il gabriele II
San Vincenzo
The wreck of the Gabriele II justifies the finest dive on this stretch of coastline. The vessel was probably a late 19th-century steamship, given the rather unusual shape of its bow. It lies stern-down at a depth of 45 metres. The ship’s name is fictitious, like that of many other wrecks in the area. The man who discovered the wreck, Simone Innocenti, named it after the men who supplied him with data and information regarding wreck hunting. Thus the names: Gabriele II, Rudi I and II, Seal etc. The Gabriele II rises from the sandy floor, inclined at an angle of about 45°. This position makes for an impressive sight and allows divers to make a fascinating tour below the hull.
route:
The descent is made along a fixed mooring rope attached to the top of the ship’s bridge, at a depth of 38 metres. Head from here towards the wreck, go over the side of the ship, and continue your descent to 43 metres. Keeping the wreck on your left, you will soon find yourself passing underneath the hull in a breathtaking seascape. If you look up you will get an unusual and evocative view of the wreck.
Proceeding around the wreck, pass over the other side of the ship until you get to what remains of the deck and the funnel, inside which lives a marvellous conger-eel, used to visits from scuba divers.
Retracing your path, you come to the deck, behind the bridge. Having had a look around this, you can continue your tour on the foredeck until you get to the winches and the anchor chains. You then come out of the hull to have a look at the impressive bow, passing through strips of net wrapped around the hull and moving with the currents, describing an ever-changing seascape. Go back in from the other side and finally return to the rope to make your ascent.
