Although they were part of an archipelago 20 million years ago, today the hills behind Livorno form the Livorno Hills Park which includes a large area of Collesalvetti.
The Park, where woods of heather, holm-oak, elm and cork flourish, is a unique example of Mediterranean scrub.
Flowering broom and orchids add brightness to the park’s colours.
Poplars, willows and ash grow along the rivers and streams. Wild boar, foxes, weasels and martens make their home in the Park.
As well as the natural environment, the Park contains archaeological finds and interesting monuments such as the Sambuca and the Aqueduct designed by the architect Poccianti.
The Park is a favourite place for hiking, walking, biking and horse riding along many well-marked trails.
