an island that is not
For many years the hill area standing behind Livorno, Rosignano and Collesalvetti has been a neglected land,
a destination for hermits, shepherds and local day-trippers.
Fortunately in the last few years people have become aware of the great eco-touristic value of these hills,
which until now have been exploited in an unsystematic and not well co-ordinated manner.
A couple of years ago on the occasion of a conference organised by the province of Livorno, you could hear
about an “island that is not”, an expression referring to the origins of this place.
Indeed it used to be a fossil island, that is, a real island joined to the land only in relatively recent
geological ages.
The natural park of Colline Livornesi is not just a project any longer, as you will soon benefit from all
the necessary assistance (signs, accessible paths, rest areas and maps) to make the most of this green island,
a true paradise for day-trippers.
