la grotta del boccale
Antignano - Livorno
This is a very beautiful and varied dive: there is an abundance of marine life and a wall that hides a cave, the floor of which lies at 24 metres. A second cave lies at 39 metres. The entrance to the cave at the base of the wall is very wide, but then gets narrower.
The exit is at 17 metres. The ceiling of the cave is encrusted with coral growing on the bare rock. There are morays, two-banded seabream and dentex. Keep an eye on instrument readings (air/time). The depths reached mean that you can quickly get to decompression limits. The dive can be quite demanding with reduced visibility.
route:
The dive begins on the shore opposite the ramp. Head for 220° for about 250 metres. There is a constant depth of about 12/13 metres throughout this stretch, up to a point where, at 16 metres, after a kind of rise, the wall begins, bottoming out at 24 metres. Proceeding towards open sea for about 30 metres, you will come to the practically vertical drop-off which descends to 39 metres. Keeping the wall on your right, the sea bed rises to 24 metres.
At about 2/3 of air supply return to the first wall. At the base of this wall, at 24 metres, is the entrance to the cave. The exit is at 17 metres. From the exit we head for 40° and go back to the shore over an area of cobbles and Mediterranean tapeweed.
