The city where the
composer Pietro
Mascagni, Giovanni
Fattori, founder of the
Macchiaioli school,
Amedeo Modigliani and
the poet Giorgio Caproni
were born contains a
wealth of culture.
In the splendid rooms of
the "Giovanni Fattori"
Civic Museum, housed in
the nineteenth century
Villa Mimbelli, visitors can
admire the works of
Tuscan painters from the
nineteenth and early
twentieth century, as well
as 100 magnificent works
by the Macchiaioli
painters and international
temporary exhibitions.
The city's prettiest park,
Villa Fabbricotti, is also
the site of the "F. D.
Guerrazzi" Biblioteca
Labronica full of precious
volumes.
The Goldoni Theatre
presents a full programme
of shows and concerts
and also puts on operas
seen all over the world.
Livorno is enlivened all
year round by original,
interesting events. Effetto
Venezia, held in the
historic quarter of the city,
is without doubt the most
entertaining. For over a
week, the alleys and old
streets along the canals
are brightly lit to host
events, concerts, local
products and tasty menus
offered by the quarter's
restaurants.
I Macchiaioli
Livorno's beautiful
colours were a source
of inspiration for the
Macchiaioli, a great
school of painters that
included Fattori,
Nomellini, Ghiglia,
Puccini and Bartolena.
In the twentieth century,
the "post-macchiaioli",
such as Renato Natali,
carried on this tradition,
fuelling an interest
in painting that is like a
collective passion in
Livorno.
The numerous events
held in the city, such as
the splendid permanent
exhibitions, the
temporary shows and
the painting awards,
testify to this interest.
