The Museum is situated in the restored Fortress, one of Piombino’s oldest buildings built around a
3rd-century square tower, the original eastern gateway to the Medieval city.
Archaeological excavations carried out before restoration revealed aspects of local history before the 12th century.
The Museum contains medieval artefacts, graphic reconstructions, information stands and a film illustrating
the history of the building, of Piombino and the families which ruled it, including the Baciocchi-Bonaparts,
and the “international” role played by the city between 1399 and 1815.
