The Baratti-Populonia archeological park
Numerous reminders of
the Etruscan and Roman
eras are to be found in
Baratti and Populonia.
The 80 hectare
Archaeological Park,
which can be visited
along organised trails,
combines history and
archaeology in a
beautiful, unspoilt
natural setting.
The remains of industrial
buildings can be seen in
the Park, and a walk on
the beach gives a view
of the area of an ancient
forge.
The San Cerbone
monumental
necropolis, the Etruscan
necropolis built near the
sea, contains the remains
of metalworking sites.
On the lower hills, quarries
alternate with the
fascinating Caves
necropolis comprising
chamber tombs dug out of
the rock.
A basalt road, known as
Via della Romanella,
leads from the lower town
to the acropolis. Via del
Monastero takes visitors
on another step back in
time. Medieval Populonia
is revealed in the remains
of the San Quirico
Benedictan monastery
hidden in the woods.
In the centre of the city is
the monumental area with
Roman temples
overlooking the square
and at the top of the
basalt road, the Front of
the Logge.
Medieval Populonia,
surrounded by walls built
to defend against pirate
attacks and dominated by
the Fortress which dates
to the early XV century,
encloses paved streets,
little shops and a private
museum of Etruscan
and Roman artifacts found
in the surrounding area
and the sea.
