Just a short distance from
the sea, woods and
wetlands alternate with
beautiful countryside with
a wealth of vineyards,
farms, wine cellars and oil
mills.
The splendid wetlands
contain about 100
hectares of marshland,
the freshwater Bottagone
reed beds where water
lilies, bamboo and marsh
orchids grow, and the
saltwater Orti marshes.
Numerous bird species
live here, some nesting
and some present only at
certain times of year,
including the marsh harrier,
stilt plover, red heron,
greater white heron, pink
flamingo and osprey.
The oasis contains a
nature trail and two nature
observation posts.
Montioni Natural Park, a
dense wood of oak, cork
trees, strawberry trees,
buckthorn and lentisk,
where roe deer and
squirrels live, is silhouetted
against a background
of blue sea. The signed
trails wind through heather,
broom and orchids.
Trails of great natural,
historic and scenic interest
wind through the
Punta Falcone Park, set
between the Gulfs of
Salivoli and Cala Moresca
(entrance to the Baratti-
Populonia Park).
The Sterpaia Coastal
Park is a valuable, rare
wet forest, typical of the
old Maremma coastal
landscape, home to
centuries-old plants and
small fauna. Sand dunes
separate the forest of ash
and oak from the sea,
bordered by long, white
sandy beaches.
Watersports of all kinds
can be enjoyed here, and
trails through the park are
ideal for walks, bicycle
and horse riding.
