The mediaeval stones of Bibbona are the starting point of a journey deep in the green heart of a more silent and
intimate Tuscany, where it is usual to move from one place to another without hurrying, on foot or on the back
of a Maremma thoroughbred.
Along the tracks of Macchia della Magona the rest of the world seems to be very far away. A never-ending
peace will take you along the roads of this enchanting wood consisting of 1600 hectares.
There is something magic and untouched about this green breathing-space, which preserves the genetic code of
Maremma, rough but gentle, welcoming but wild.
In the past this forest had an important productive role as it was the storehouse from which the fuel necessary
for the ironworks of Real Magona of Cecina was taken.
Nowadays it is the best destination for environmentally friendly sport tourism. The “black men”,
those who made charcoal, are not there anymore, but instead there is still a particularly rich flora and fauna
which demonstrate the integrity of the environment. It is not surprising that Macchia della Magona has been
classified as a “biotope” by C.N.R. (National Committee of Research).
